Sharon and I have had our share of adversity, but we’ve learned to use those moments to grow. With over 70 years of combined experience, we can help you do the same – no matter what comes your way. Sharon tells the story of a very challenging moment in our lives as Jaison’s parents.

The ambulance siren was blaring, but I couldn’t hear it.

All I could hear were the strange wheezing sounds of Jaison’s breathing as his ten-year-old body contorted in neverending seizures. As the ambulance sped down the street, the EMT’s worked on Jaison. There was nothing I could do but sit and watch as the world whizzed past.

Each second seemed to be an hour long. I could hear my mind wondering if Jaison would die, or if his ability to think would be even more compromised. I was filled with terror. For much of my life, I was not someone who was good at coping with crisis. On this day, I started down the usual path towards panic, but then something unexpected started to occur.

I knew that at any moment, the seizures could stop for a brief interval, and there was a chance that Jaison could wake up. If this was going to be the last moment I was to spend with my precious Jaison, I wanted him to see the magnificence of his own heart reflected back to him. It wasn’t just a mother’s love that I wanted him to see if he woke up between seizures, I wanted him to see Divine Love.

On an intellectual level, I could remember what Divine Love is; but that wasn’t enough. My heart longed to be a pure presence of love in that moment for Jaison.

The ambulance swung around the corner as the medical people were taking Jaison’s vitals and reporting the results to the doctor at the hospital. My mind felt the pull to begin telling myself how horrible this situation was, but I resisted the impulse to go down that path.

It’s as if all the spiritual experiences of my life, suddenly converged. Almost without effort, the mind became still. The body was experiencing the intense sensations of fear, grief and anger combined, but instead of pulling away from the pain with stories about what might happen in the future, I made a different choice.

I was willing to be totally aware of the whole experience, fear and all. As I brought more and more awareness into the moment; it was like seeing the emotions through an electron microscope. All this spaciousness appeared between the sensations of emotion, like I was looking at the spaces between protons and neutrons. A quantum portal opened and the spaciousness revealed the magnificence of Divine Love.

Through it all, the mother continued to do what mothers do in such circumstances. And although I was not separate from being the mother, my identity was mother and Divine Love simultaneously.

We were whisked into an emergency room, and Trevor appeared. Jaison was still seizing and the nurse came in and ask all kind of medical questions. When she left, Trevor and I stood over Jaison in silence. We hugged and then we looked at each other. Trevor’s hand brushed the hair away of my face. “I really think that Jaison’s going to be ok. How are you doing, sweetie?” he asked.

I just looked at him, and I saw that he saw what was happening for me.

“I see Unity Consciousness in your eyes.” Trev said to me. “That’s so wonderful that you can see the divine love is here even in a moment like this.”

“You can only see it in me, because your experiencing it too,” I replied. “I love Jaison so much, I just want him to see in my eyes that love is here and he doesn’t need to be afraid.”

By evening, Jaison’s seizures had totally stopped, but he was so groggy from all the drugs that I doubted that he could comprehend the depth of love I was beaming at him. The medical team reassure us that as far as they could tell there was no major damage to his brain and that he could go home with us.

A few days later, Jaison typed, “I had a dream and I saw you and Dad looking like angels.”

This 4th of July, you might even feel like you have been stranded on a desert island, and you’re looking out over the horizon for a ship to take you home, and losing hope of being rescued. It’s kind of a funny image, but then again, it’s not so funny.

We’re all disappointed that there will be no parades, no large community pancake breakfasts, no outdoor fairs and no fireworks shows. We were all hoping that by summer the pandemic would all be over, and we could joyously celebrate our country’s birthday. But instead, this holiday weekend is accentuating how many good times we’ve been missing this summer.

After months and months of social distancing, you’re probably somewhat adjusted to what’s happening. Yet, with this second wave, maybe you’re also feeling some degree of hopelessness about things getting back to the way things used to be.

And since the pandemic has been going for long enough now, you have probably wondered not only ‘WHEN’ it will end, but ‘IF’ it will end. If we are going to be going through this for a while longer, then we have to find a way to be happy even though external events aren’t going the way we want.

What do you do when external events keep blocking your path to finding happiness in life?

How can you let these challenging times bring out the best in you instead of the worst?

How do you choose the high road?

You choose the Uncommon Path to Happiness and Inner Peace!

There is a common path to happiness, and an uncommon path to happiness. You’re familiar with the common path; the idea here is to get happiness from the events that happen in your life. But sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be a way to be happy about the events in your life.

Then it’s time to explore the uncommon path. The uncommon path begins with a challenge. Can you find happiness, even if the external events in your life are not going the way you want?

Why would you even want to try to do this? Because sometimes life gets hard enough that the common path to finding happiness is just not an option, at least for a while.

Another reason to give the uncommon path to happiness a try is that you have begun to realize that the happiness you get from external events is fleeting and it comes and goes. You’re tired of working tirelessly for just a flash of happiness. You’re wondering if there is a way to find joy within your own heart, so you can live from a more sustainable place of inner fulfillment.

Most of us don’t have a clue how to do this, and it seems downright impossible.

But it actually is possible to connect to a source of fulfillment within your own heart. It’s easier than you might think.

The good news is that there is a way to find happiness and joy within, and it’s not dependent of external circumstances. There is a way to increase the magnifying power of your awareness, so that you can look upon feelings of hopelessness, or loneliness with precision and see that these feelings are not as difficult to deal with as you thought they would be. Then, the most amazing thing happens. The feelings open to reveal an exquisite spaciousness. It’s thrilling to realize that this spaciousness is actually an unending source of inner happiness and even joy. It doesn’t have to take years or decades for this to happen – it can happen in an instant!

Do you want to keep falling into hopelessness or do you want to learn how to let challenging times bring out the best in you?

At Hart Wisdom, we provide spiritual mentoring groups and private sessions to show you how to discover the uncommon path to sustained inner peace and joy. Please check out our website by exploring the menu options at the top of the page. We are looking forward to meeting you soon.

Trevor and I were sitting on the porch last night, looking out at the huge pine tree forest surrounding our home, and the topic turned to the Great Depression that our parents and grandparents experienced. We began comparing what they went through from 1929 to 1939 with what we have been going through during this lockdown.

Trevor said, “This pandemic has been going on long enough that we have a whole country that is going through a sort of emotional depression. It’s a different kind of “great depression” than our parents and grandparents went through, but it’s deeper in some ways, because even though they were going through worse economic difficulties, they had something to get them through that we don’t have.”

“Really, what did they have that we don’t have?” I pondered

“They had the strength of gathering together with their extended family, and their friends. That’s how they got through the Great Depression. The pandemic has taken all of that away. Maybe what we are going through is harder because we have to do it on our own.” he further explained.

“My God, your right! Unless people have children, or a partner, they are going through this utterly alone. It’s hardest on people who are single. And even if people have a small nuclear family they are still cut off from the larger community. FaceTime and Skype help but it’s certainly not the same, and clearly it’s not as good,” I replied.

“I don’t know who said it, but I know some famous leader said that ‘family is the backbone of America’. This lockdown is weighing heavily on that backbone,” he continued

There was a pause and the crickets chirp and a gentle breeze rang the chimes that hang down from the porch ceiling.

“Right now, our country has so many problems, there is so much corruption and confusion, that at the moment it’s kind of hard to love our country. But when I let go of all the confusion, and I just think about celebrating the 4th of July over the years, I remember what this country stands for. The fourth of July is about celebrating freedom and independence. And when I think about that I remember that I actually love this country”, I said with a whisper of nostalgia.

“Unconditional love is something we strive for in our lives. Having children certainly taught us the importance of loving no matter what the children did. Maybe it’s time to love our country unconditionally just like we love our children,” Trevor commented enthusiastically.

“How do we do that? How do we bridge the divide that is tearing our precious country apart?” I ask.

“We need to remember what unites us. We need to remember that as Americans we all love freedom and independence. And as much as we want safety, we also don’t want to sacrifice our freedom and independence for safety. It’s about getting the balance right,” he wisely replied.

“It’s about being safe and being free. That’s something most everyone can get behind,” I reply. “I am so tired of the division we have been seeing around us, it’s nice to talk about what unites us,” I realize.

Then we both agreed that we wanted to send out a message to our Hart Wisdom Community about how important it is to find some way to continue to celebrate the 4th of July. Someway to continue to share our love of freedom with each other and our children and our grandchildren.

Our celebration is writing this blog post to you. Can you comment below and tell us how you are keeping the celebration of the 4th of July happening in your house. Perhaps your comment will be the start of your private festivities.

Have a wonderful 4th of July!

How are you doing with the shutdown, and the virus? How much has your life changed?

For some of us, it’s about health concerns and for other people it’s about economic uncertainty. For many of us it’s about both.

For some of us, it’s about loneliness, and for other people it’s about the conflicts that arise when you spend too much time with the same people. In a strange way, some of us are feeling cut off from friends, even though we are surrounded by family.

One of my friends recently said to me, “Recently, I lost it for a bit. This situation really brought these intense feelings to a head. Now, I am doing ok, but for a while there I really lost it.”

I bet you can relate to what she said.

After 6 weeks of quarantine most of us feel like we are going a little “crazy.” Well, we’re NOT going crazy. Something else is happening. Something important.

What’s happening is that we are coming into contact with a part of ourselves that we usually avoid with all the day-to-day busyness. The quarantine has stripped away the busyness. Thus, a wave of emotions pours forth from our unconscious and we feel overwhelmed. That can make us feel a little crazy.

But there is another way to look at this unveiling of the shadow side.

Most of us were brought up to believe that expressing feelings is immature and to be avoided at all cost, and that emotional maturity is the ability to repress any feelings we are having and just “be strong”.

If you try this “be strong” technique, when you’re going through a hard time, then you have probably found you can succeed at doing it, as long as you stay busy. But then at night, when there is nothing to do, all those feelings start lurking around your bedroom. You think to yourself, “Boy, have I got them all fooled. I am not strong; I am a mess. And no one knows.”

That’s when redefining what emotional maturity is can really help.

Emotional maturity isn’t about hiding your true feelings. It’s about keeping your heart open no matter what you feel.

Emotional maturity is about making the unconscious conscious. It’s about learning what the strong feelings are teaching you about how to improve your life.

When times are good it’s like we have a brake pad protecting us from having to learn how to deal with our powerful feelings. In times of uncertainty, the feelings that have been hidden from view come to the surface.
